Confectionery college school students celebrated as they made the world's longest roll cake in Japan on 17 April 2013. A team of 90 patissiers and students completed the 130.68m roll cake at the catering college in Tokyo. The army of cooks used 54kg flour, 43kg sugar and 2,682 eggs in their record-breaking bake-off. It was declared the world's longest roll cake by Guinness World Records.
The team beat the previous record of 115.09m which was also made in Japan in 2011.
The winning cake was decorated with 100kg of whipped cream, 10kg of sugar, 45g of gold powder and other ingredients.

Cake Decoration: Drop Strings

Today is our section of Cake Decoration Techniques:
Drop Strings on a Cake

The image you see in the post, has arcs at the outer edge on upper part. They are called drop strings.
To make Drop Strings:
Step 1:
With a toothpick, mark horizontal divisions on cake in the width you desire. Bag Position: shoulder level at 4:30 (7:30 for left hand decorating). Tip: lightly above the surface to attach. Touch tip to first mark and squeeze, pausing momentarily so that icing sticks to surface.

Step 2:
While squeezing, pull the bag toward you. Continue squeezing to allow the icing to drape naturally into an arc. Icing will drop by itself--do not move the tip down with the string. The end of the tip should be the same distance from the surface as the width from point to point on your cake.

Step 3:
Stop pressure before you touch tip to second mark to end string. Repeat, keeping drop strings uniform in length and width.

Step 4:
Try a different color for each row of multiple drop strings-put holiday colors together to really dress up your cake. To add multiple rows of strings, mark the cake for the deepest row and pipe that row.

Step 5:
Return to the first drop string point, squeeze the bag, and drop a string with a slightly shorter arc than in the first row.

Step 6:
Join the end of this string to the end of the corresponding string in the first row. Repeat the process for a third row of drop strings above the second.

Decorating a cake: Floral Decoration
You might be surprised to know the change that decoration brings to a cake. Like you see in the picture, a plain green fondant covered cake turns out to be so picturesque with floral decoration all around it. You can do it in your kitchen too. For any cake that you bake, you can pep it up with decorations to make it look like any other expensive cake you ordered from a bakery.
Cutters are available in the market in all kinds of floral shapes and sizes. All you have to do is get some fondant ready, roll it out and let the cutter do the magic. A little of water does the magic of pasting these flowers onto the cake.
Now you can work this magic out on all your home made cakes!

Cakes do not look good bare !!

Here's a small tip:

Cakes do not look good bare.

If you do not have enough time to make a frosting by

yourselves. Then here's what you can try.

Try sprinkling icing sugar over the cake using a small tea

strainer. It also adds taste to the cake along with good looks.

You can try sprinkling icing sugar by making patterns too.

You can use templates that are already available. Or get

creative and make one by yourself!

Today we start a series of “Cake Decoration Techniques”:

The Basic and Simple Swirl:
You can make any cupcake beautiful or any cake good looking, with this basic decoration technique. You will require a nozzle of the type shown in the image, Tip 1M. You can use buttercream frosting of a medium or light consistency. To make the basic swirl, you will have to follow the following steps:
  1. Squeeze a little frosting in the centre to form a star by holding the nozzle upright at 90 degrees to the cake.
  2. Without releasing the pressure, raise the tip slightly and make a spiral around the star.
  3. Where you end the first spiral, move the tip of the nozzle to the centre again, and this time make a spiral again on the inner edge of the first spiral.
  4. Complete this second spiral, and then release the pressure towards the centre of the cake.

Now you have a beautiful and delicious looking cupcake instead of the earlier boring one.

Cupcakes: History

Who doesn't love cupcakes?
Which one in the picture do you choose?

Why are they called cupcakes?
A little history:
The cupcake evolved in the US sometime in the 19th century, and it was revolutionary because it saved a lot of time in kitchen. From ingredients being weighed in, the trend shifted to ingredients being measured out. It is yet to be found by experts as to where exactly the name cupcake originated. There are a few theories: the cakes were originally cooked in cups and another, the ingredients used to make cupcakes were measured out in cups. Sometimes they were also called number cakes, because it was easy to remember by measurements of ingredients it took to create them: One cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, four eggs, one cup of milk, and one spoonful of soda.
Today we see cupcakes of wide variety, fillings, flavours, icings and decorations.

Bored from regular cakes ! Switch to Customized and Theme cakes!

Picture Courtesy : TLC Fabluous Cakes

If you think customization was limited only to cars, computers and laptops, then I guess you need to think again. Remember how you desire an extra dollop of butter in your Pav Bhaji? Extra sev and no onions at all in your Sev puri? Nah to chutney or to chilli in your Vada Pav? We all seem to have given up on the idea of experimenting with food by sticking to the standard menu and mundane recipes. Dont We all want that extra iota of something or maybe not 'that' thing in what we eat?  Subway currently follows the best customization when it comes to sandwiches. It is the ‘in’ word today, the feature that personalizes a product all the more and makes every product distinguished from the other; its farewell to mass production. Customization today, is not only in terms of ingredients or quantity, but also in form and shapes.

Cakes have always been the means to herald celebration- symbolic of emotional attachment. When cakes speak of such emotional instances in our life, events that are personal and special to you; why celebrate such an occasion with a cake that looks similar to the birthday cake of your neighbor or the anniversary cake of your boss? Children are supposed to be the ones who score the highest on enthusiasm when it comes to cakes. Then why should your princess celebrate her day with a round or square chocolate cake, when all she ever wished for is a beautiful and gorgeous Barbie chiseled in the cake and all that your son dreams about is Chota Bheem?

Cake Studio brings you the opportunity to materialize that cake of your dreams. We specialize in all types of customized and theme cakes: a cake for your baby boy on his first birthday or an anniversary cake for your chess loving husband. And with all the care that is required for these cakes, we take the responsibility of delivering it to you. Bringing dreams to reality for all your special occasions, Cake Studio delivers cakes in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane.
